Fishing!

On Friday night we tried to go fishing.  I say tried because none of us caught anything.  We got to the lake about 5:30-6pm and stayed past 8pm.  It never got dark so we really didn't know the time!  The dogs had more fun than we did because they got to play in the water.  It felt good on my hands but I know that water would have been COLD if I had gotten more than my hands wet!  Buddy didn't swim that much because it was so cold to him.

On the way home we stopped and took some pictures of the mountains in Denali National Park.  I don't know if we saw Mt. McKinley or not, but they were pretty.  It's been a while since I have seen real mountains.  Hopefully we will get to explore Denali this summer after the baby is born.  I'll post some of our pics!!

Have a good day!!

SPRING!!!!

It is absolutely gorgeous here.  The past week or so the temp has been in the 70s!!  I guess because I’m preggo it’s felt a lot hotter than that.  I’ve been wearing dresses, flip flops and rolling my jeans up so they are capris.  I’m really liking living here right now.  The days of winter seem so far away.  I can’t believe it snowed May 5th.   Seems so far ago!!
Gabe and I have been hiking by the river on post.  The dogs and we love it.  We have to be careful with the dogs running free because it is calving season for the moose.  I don’t want buster to get in a fight with a moose.  I’m scared he would lose.  He’s chased a couple already, but luckily they weren’t cows with calves.
One funny thing, I got POOPED on by a bird last week!!!  This has never happened before.  I think it was a seagull.  Apparently they migrate here because it is warmer than the coast.  It’s weird to see all these seagulls flying around.  There are a lot of birds up here.  More than I’ve seen in a while.  Maybe I just never looked this hard In Mississippi or the other places we have lived.
I’m going to try a post some pics.  We got a new camera and have taken a lot.  I just have to dumb down the quality so they will upload.  I’ll try.
Have a good week!!

Yard Sale!!

Today was the post wide yard sale!!  The alarm went off at 6:30am and we left the house at 7:15.  One huge difference between yard sales up here and back in Mississippi was the time.  We got to the first sale about 7:30 and they were just beginning to put stuff out.  Back in MS, you would have to get there at 6 or earlier to get the best deals.  It was kinda of nice to sleep in and be the first ones there to get the deals.  We found a lot of stuff for the baby and some things for us.  Some prices were crazy!!  They wanted to sale used items you can't get here at full price and say they were saving you shipping, or they would tell you what they paid for it so you would think you were getting a better deal.  I noticed the men charged less than the women because they wanted everything to go.  If you live around a military installation and see a base wide yard sale GO!!!  See if you can find a family that is moving.  They usually try to sale everything, so they don't have to move it.  You can get some great deals!!

Poor Gabe!!  Since I'm no help building things outside, he has to build our garden and fill it in with soil.  I really wish I could help him.  At least he had Buster and Buddy!!  Both have been outside with him most of the time.  Buster is partly yellow now because of the pollen.  Yes the pollen is just now attacking us and it is beating me.  I've been sick all week.  I feel better today!!  Back to the garden.  We were told to use a raided bed because the soil is not good and because the ground may not get warm enough!!  It's May 15th and there are still some water that is frozen.  I really hope my garden grows so we shall see!!!

Wednesday night we went out to eat at a place called the Salmon Bake.  It was an outdoor restaurant that served Fried Halibut, Grilled Salmon or Prime Rib.  Sides included a salad bar and baked beans.  Then at the end you got coffee and dessert.  We laughed when we got there because it was all OUTSIDE BUFFET STYLE!!!!!  The customer had the choice to sit inside or outside.  We choose inside because the temp was only 50 degrees and the wind was blowing and we were COLD.  I am so ready for 90 degree days!!!!!

Now that it is warming up some we can explore more of the city and Alaska!!  I am so excited to start.  We are only two hours away from Denali so when the little one gets a few months old we can go!!!!

Hope you are having a good weekend!!

I think the days of snow are over, at least I hope!!  Today is a gorgeous day!!  The sun is shining and there is only a slight breeze.  The mosquitoes will probably be bad but it's OK.  For some reason these mosquitoes don't leave the big whelps on you when they bite you like the ones do down south.  Yesterday we took the dogs hiking at 8 pm and the mosquitoes were out in full force.  I only got to walk about 20 minutes before I had to get in the Subaru and hide from them.  They were swarming me.  Mosquitoes have always like me better than Gabe, and now that I'm pregnant it's 10 times worse!!!  We hiked by the river thinking they wouldn't be there because it is a fast moving river and mosquitoes don't lay their eggs in rivers but we were wrong.  Another good thing about these mosquitoes is they don't carry heart-worms so our dogs don't have to be on any of those medications!!  Which is good because Buster acted like you were killing him when you tried to put that stuff on his neck.

I really don't know if it gets dark at all at night now.  I know at 11:30 pm it looks like dust and at 3:30 am I can see outside.  I looked it up and here are the statistics for today:
Sunrise at4:38 AM

Sunset at10:59 PM

Duration of day: 18 hours, 21 minutes (7 minutes, 1 second longer than yesterday
It soon will be no sunset.

Hope you all are having a good week!!

I can't get any pics to load right now.  I will try later!!

CInco de Mayo!!

It is crazy up here. Cinco de Mayo is not so caliente for us!! It has been snowing almost all day and it is starting to stick to the ground. I knew it would be cold and snowing in May but after 70 degree weather last week I thought it was done. I really need a warm place on the beach in the sun to take a nap!!

Well, I started my veggie garden inside about a month ago and they are doing so well. Gabe moved them into the bathroom and put a grow light above them. They have grown like WEEDS!!! I started tomatoes, carrots, green beans, corn, cucumber, and some peppers. I don’t know if my corn will produce because it doesn’t get that warm up here but I am going to try. With 20+ hours of daylight there is no telling how BIG my veggies are going to be. I can’t wait to get them outside in my garden. Course I have to wait until it stops SNOWING!! It’s still snowing by the way.

Going out to celebrate Cinco de Mayo tonight. Too bad it’s not outside on a patio somewhere drinking margaritas!! I’m the DD and it’s still snowing!! In case you haven’t noticed this snow is blowing my mind. I really got to get back down south where there is no snow in May!!

Things that remind me of Mississippi

The past few days it has been raining on and off.  No thunderstorms like home but the kind of rain that makes you lazy and sleepy.  It has been nice.  After living in Texas for two years and up here since December, I forgot how much I really missed the rain.  Although I am tired of driving on our road and trying not to get stuck!!  The road is dirt and full of holes!!  Which reminds me of the back roads in Mississippi.

One more thing, remember those funny commercials for the furniture store in Starkville on the road by the old Wal-Mart.  I can't remember the name of the store but I remember the commercials.  Here is one for a furniture store in Fairbanks.  Watch it from beginning to end.  It is hilarious!!  Nice to know I still live in a small town where people can have fun.
